Housing Chickens
One of the most important issues to be dealt with
before getting your chickens is their safety. The garden or yard must be
capable of keeping foxes out and chickens in. Chickens don't fly very
well but can jump quite high. Foxes are very determined and can dig
under a fence and if they are digging in under one side whilst the
chickens are digging out on the other it won't take long before disaster
occurs. Also if you are very proud of your garden don't consider
chickens they will gladly eat your favourite plants. Mine especially
enjoy Fuchsias and will comically jump 2 feet in the air to reach a
leaf..
you will find a wide variety of hen houses on
sale. They should have a draught and waterproof sleeping area. They will
also need a nest box or two. This area should also be more fox proof
than the rest of the house. Once it is dark the chickens will normally
make their way to their sleeping area of their own accord.
